Fontainebleau forest faces recovery after massive wildfire

The Fontainebleau forest in France is preparing to reopen following a massive wildfire that occurred in mid-July. The blaze, which was recorded as the largest since 1863, destroyed approximately 2,000 hectares of the forest massif, representing nearly 10% of the area.

Due to safety concerns regarding the risk of further fires and the potential for trees with fire-damaged roots to collapse unexpectedly, large portions of the forest remain restricted. Currently, 76 out of 90 sectors are closed, with the current entry ban set to last until at least August 14.

The prolonged closure has significantly impacted the local tourism industry, particularly for the bouldering community. Local businesses, including accommodation providers and restaurants, have reported a substantial decline in customers and reservations due to the lack of climbers and tourists.
