Fontainebleau forest wildlife faces fire and drought
Wildlife in the Fontainebleau forest is facing severe environmental challenges following a recent fire and an ongoing period of extreme heat and drought. A fire approximately one month ago destroyed 2,200 hectares of vegetation, resulting in the death of small fauna such as insects, reptiles, and hedgehogs, while larger animals like deer and wild boar were forced to flee the area.
In response, the association Pour une forêt vivante, led by wildlife photographer Yannick Dagneau, has established an animal sanctuary on private land bordering the state forest. Volunteers are regularly providing water to both small and large wildlife using basins equipped with stones and branches to ensure smaller animals can drink safely. This initiative aims to provide relief as exceptional drought conditions continue to dry up natural water sources and vegetation.
