Fonus survey reveals shift toward festive funerals in Sweden
A recent survey conducted by the Swedish funeral agency Fonus reveals a shifting cultural attitude toward death and mourning in Sweden. The study, which included 1,000 respondents aged 18 to 84, suggests a move away from traditional, somber ceremonies toward more personalized, life-affirming celebrations.
According to the findings, 35 percent of respondents want their funerals to be more festive and focused on the life lived. Many expressed a desire for elements such as playing favorite songs (34 percent), holding ceremonies under the open sky (26 percent), providing guests with personal mementos (14 percent), or concluding the service around a fire (12 percent). Some participants even compared their ideal farewell to a birthday party or a Midsummer celebration.
In response to these trends, Fonus has launched a campaign titled ‘The Swedish Exit’ to challenge conventional funeral norms and encourage people to discuss their personal preferences for how they wish to be remembered.
