Food affordability and rising prices strain US household budgets

Rising food costs and stagnant wages are creating significant financial strain for many American households. Fast-food menu prices have increased by approximately 60 percent over the last decade, a rate nearly double the national inflation average.

In states like Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana, the combination of low median household incomes and food costs makes quick meals a heavy burden. Mississippi ranks as the most difficult state to afford fast food, with staple items consuming 0.48 percent of monthly household earnings due to the nation's lowest median income.

On a broader scale, food remains one of the largest household expenses, often second only to housing. National food prices saw a significant spike in 2022, and recent data suggests that many working-age adults are increasingly relying on credit cards or payday loans to afford groceries, contributing to rising food insecurity.
