Food and Drink Federation warns of rising UK food inflation

The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has issued warnings regarding rising food inflation in the United Kingdom, forecasting that inflation will reach nearly 4% by Christmas. The industry expects prices to accelerate further, potentially peaking at 6.4% in July 2027.

Several factors are driving these projections, including the impact of conflict in Iran on energy and logistics, as well as extreme weather patterns such as El Niño and recent droughts across the UK and Europe. These environmental and geopolitical shocks are expected to disrupt global food supply chains and increase the costs of energy, packaging, and transport.

Industry representatives noted that while manufacturers have previously absorbed some price shocks to protect consumers, their resilience is diminishing. A £100 weekly grocery shop from 2020 is projected to cost nearly £150 by next summer. The FDF is calling on the government to address food security and relieve regulatory pressures to mitigate the impact on households.
