Food-centric travel trends emerge for 2025 and 2026

Emerging travel trends for 2025 and 2026 highlight a shift toward food-centric exploration, with travelers increasingly prioritizing local culinary authenticity over traditional sightseeing.

A growing movement known as ‘shelf discovery’ involves tourists visiting local supermarkets, mini-marts, and corner stores to experience regional cultures through food. This trend has been bolstered by social media, where snack-hunting videos serve as travel guides for destinations such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, and Bali. According to Skyscanner’s 2026 Travel Trends Report, approximately two-thirds of travelers believe sampling local food is the premier way to understand a culture, while over half feel that grocery shopping provides a more authentic, local experience.

As a result, food items are replacing traditional souvenirs. Travelers are increasingly bringing home regional snacks, condiments, and sweets, such as Japanese konbini snacks or Mexican candy, as mementos of their trips.

Additionally, small-ship cruises are becoming a preferred method for food enthusiasts to access unique culinary landscapes. Unlike larger vessels that stick to major hubs, smaller ships can access less-trafficked ports, allowing passengers to discover regional specialties, seasonal fruits, and local markets that are more closely tied to the specific destination's identity.
