Food industry trends focus on plant-based diets and functional health products
A long-term study published in Nature Medicine involving 105,000 participants over 30 years indicates that dietary patterns rich in plant-based foods are linked to healthier aging. Key components of these diets include high consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, low-fat dairy, and polyunsaturated fats from vegetable oils. Conversely, ultra-processed foods, high salt, saturated fats, and red or processed meats were not associated with these healthy aging patterns.
Simultaneously, the food industry is increasingly blurring the lines between daily nutrition and supplements. At the Paris International Food Show, a growing trend of functional foods was highlighted, including probiotic ice creams, fiber-enriched drinks, and wellness-focused biscuits. Industry experts note that many products are now being designed with health benefit promises, often taking the form of gummies or soups, while maintaining a focus on taste to appeal to a broader consumer base seeking longevity and prevention.
