Food inflation drives rising household costs in Catalonia and New York

Food prices in Catalonia have risen by 34% since 2020, making food the second largest household expense after housing. In the Barcelona metropolitan area, food costs represent approximately 16% of total household spending, while housing accounts for 30%. Essential goods such as milk, oil, and eggs have seen significant price hikes, with some necessities increasing between 1.5% and 11% this past summer alone.

To combat rising costs, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced the launch of five public supermarkets. This initiative aims to provide a basic basket of fresh products—including meat, fish, dairy, and vegetables—to all citizens regardless of income level, offering a 30% discount on prices.

Beyond direct price increases, consumers are facing 'shrinkflation,' where product volumes decrease while prices remain high. This economic pressure is forcing households to reduce spending on animal proteins, fresh fish, and cultural activities to maintain basic nutrition.
