Global food markets face rising inflation from geopolitical and climate pressures

Global food markets are facing significant inflationary pressures driven by geopolitical tensions, extreme weather, and rising logistics costs. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned of a new wave of food inflation, noting that the price index for grains, meat, and dairy reached its highest level since 2023.

Key drivers include instability in the Black Sea region, where Russian and Ukrainian ports handle the majority of grain exports, and tensions in the Middle East affecting shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz. These disruptions impact the availability of fertilizer, fuel, and energy. Additionally, rising diesel prices are increasing transportation costs for food distributors.

The European Central Bank has also cautioned that higher energy and raw material costs are expected to impact supermarket prices. Environmental factors, such as droughts and heatwaves, further exacerbate the situation by threatening crop yields and affecting water levels in major European waterways like the Rhine and Danube, which are critical for logistics.
