Food insecurity trends drive nutrition programs and infrastructure expansion in North America

Food insecurity remains a significant challenge across North America. In Canada, the Breakfast Club of Canada reports that one in three children in Ontario lives in a food-insecure household, contributing to a national figure of nearly 2.4 million children facing similar realities.

To address these needs, Toronto’s Student Nutrition Program is expanding its universal morning meal program to an additional 78 public schools this fall. Advocates note that universal food programs can improve mental and physical health while positively impacting educational outcomes.

In the United States, the Food Bank of the Rockies has opened a new 270,000 square foot facility in Aurora, Colorado. The facility includes 58,000 square feet of specialized cold storage designed with insulated metal panels to preserve perishable goods. This expansion aims to increase the organization's capacity to distribute dry, refrigerated, and frozen items to the Colorado and Wyoming populations.
