Food preservation and storage guidelines for home use

Proper food preservation techniques are essential for maintaining the quality, taste, and safety of various food items at home. For frozen goods like ice cream, maintaining a freezer temperature of approximately -18 °C is critical to prevent the formation of ice crystals. Using plastic wrap directly on the surface of the product before sealing the container can further reduce air contact and moisture buildup.

When storing meat, different types have varying shelf lives at -18 °C. Beef steaks or roasts can last 6 to 12 months, pork 4 to 6 months, and ground meat approximately 3 to 4 months. To prevent freezer burn and dehydration, meat should be wrapped in specific freezer bags with as much air removed as possible.

For homemade baby food, rapid cooling is vital. Such items should be refrigerated at 4 °C or below and consumed within 24 to 48 hours if they contain meat or fish. Alternatively, they can be frozen in single portions for 1 to 2 months. It is important to avoid re-storing leftovers that have been contaminated by saliva during feeding.
