Food preservation and storage strategies for cost efficiency

Traditional food preservation methods are seeing a resurgence as households look for ways to manage rising prices and energy costs. Utilizing natural cooling methods, such as earth cellars that maintain temperatures between 4 and 10 degrees Celsius, can eliminate the electricity costs associated with modern freezers.

Techniques like lactic acid fermentation, curing, and drying allow for long-term storage without continuous energy use. These practices align with recommendations from the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), which suggests maintaining a ten-day food supply for resilience.

Proper storage is also critical for food quality and safety. Certain items, such as maple syrup, nuts, and nut butters, should be refrigerated after opening to prevent mold growth or rancidity, especially when they lack preservatives.
