Food preservation techniques and non-electric cooling solutions
Proper beef storage requires maintaining refrigerator temperatures at 4°C or below to limit bacterial growth, according to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). To prevent cross-contamination, raw meat should be stored in airtight containers on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator, ensuring juices do not contact other foods. Whole cuts like steaks and roasts can typically be kept for three to five days.
In response to the high costs of conventional cold storage, the Indian company RuKart has developed non-electric cooling systems named Subjee Cooler and ZEN. These systems utilize Enhanced Evaporative Cooling technology to maintain temperatures below ambient levels without mechanical compressors. Designed for small-scale farmers and retailers, the technology aims to reduce food waste and improve profit margins by extending the shelf life of fruits and vegetables using passive cooling processes.
