Food preservation: Tips for storing rice and bread

Effective food storage techniques can help maintain the quality of staples like rice and bread. For rice, placing a bay leaf inside the storage container may act as a natural repellent against weevils. Clinical phytotherapist Julio Cesar Luchmann explains that bay leaves release volatile aromatic compounds, such as 1,8-cineol and eugenol, which can disorient or irritate insects. However, experts note that this is a preventative measure rather than a guaranteed protection, and it should not be used on rice that is already infested. EMBRAPA states that while weevils are not toxic to humans, infestations can reduce the nutritional value and quality of the grain.

To preserve the texture of French bread, storing it at room temperature in a cool, dry place using paper packaging is recommended for same-day consumption. For longer storage, freezing the bread while it is still fresh in airtight bags is the most effective method to maintain softness. Avoiding the refrigerator is advised, as low temperatures can accelerate starch retrogradation, causing the bread to harden more quickly. To restore crispness to previously frozen bread, lightly moistening the crust before reheating it in an oven or air fryer can help.
