Food prices become primary economic concern for Norwegians
A recent survey conducted by InFact for Nettavisen indicates that food prices are a greater economic concern for Norwegians than rising interest rates. According to the study of over 1,000 respondents, 32 percent cited food costs as their primary worry, compared to 24 percent concerned about interest rates.
Data from Statistics Norway (SSB) shows that food prices in the country have risen 12.4 percent since June 2023, outpacing the general inflation rate of 8.4 percent. Specific items have seen significant spikes, including citrus fruits and cocoa, both rising 23 percent, and coffee, which increased by 15 percent.
Experts attribute these increases to global factors such as crop failures and climate change, noting that extreme summer droughts in Norway and Europe may further drive prices up. Additionally, Norwegian food prices remain 73 percent above the EU average. Contributing factors to high domestic costs include high wages, long transport distances, a 15 percent VAT on food, and limited competition within a market dominated by three major chains: NorgesGruppen, Rema 1000, and Coop.
