Food producers adopt new technologies to meet PPWR packaging standards
New Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) requirements are driving food producers to adopt new technologies to balance recyclability with food preservation. While the industry is moving toward monomaterial designs to facilitate recycling, maintaining high protective barriers remains a challenge for products like meat, fish, cheese, and ready-to-eat meals.
To prevent oxygen and water vapor from spoiling food, companies are developing ultra-thin AlOx coatings measured in nanometers. According to Damian Dziadowiec, R&D Manager at Eurocast, monomaterials alone cannot solve all packaging issues, as high-barrier protection is essential to prevent fat oxidation and microbial growth.
