Food Retail Strike Sweeps A Coruña Province

A massive wave of walkouts hit food‑retail shops in Spain’s A Coruña province on July 24, 2026, as unions reported many stores operating at reduced capacity and logistical centres idle. The strike, organised by the four unions with representation at the bargaining table – CIG, UGT, CC OO and USO – was to continue on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26, with pickets targeting the Gadis and Froiz chains, which the unions say dominate the local collective‑bargaining talks.

The action did not lead to any reported incidents, but it left numerous supermarkets and small‑town stores partially closed while logistics hubs, especially those of Gadis, saw little activity. The unions emphasised the “unitary” platform they demand, noting that major chains such as Mercadona, Eroski, Carrefour and Alcampo are not part of the current negotiation.

The walkout coincided with the regional Day of Galicia celebrations and the Saint James festivals in Santiago, underscoring the heightened visibility of the dispute for local consumers and workers.
