Food safety and technology drive consumer confidence in hospitality

New consumer research indicates that food safety is becoming a decisive factor in customer decision-making within the hospitality sector. A Censuswide survey of 2,001 UK adults, conducted for Shield Safety, revealed that 86.7% of consumers believe food businesses should communicate their commitment to food safety. Additionally, 78% of consumers actively seek food hygiene information before dining out or ordering takeaway.

Industry experts suggest that while hospitality operators invest heavily in safety systems, allergen management, and staff training, much of this effort remains invisible to the consumer. Making these commitments visible presents an opportunity for businesses to build reputation and influence customer choice.

In tandem with safety standards, modern technology is being utilized to address operational challenges such as pest management. The integration of IoT-enabled monitoring and advanced surveillance systems allows for real-time tracking and instant alerts. These technological advancements help food businesses maintain regulatory compliance, automate monitoring, and prevent infestations before they escalate, thereby protecting business reputation and efficiency.
