Food safety experts warn against reusing ice cream containers
Experts are warning against the common practice of reusing single-use ice cream containers to store leftovers, such as beans. Many of these plastic containers are not designed for multiple use cycles and can become scratched, deformed, or develop small fissures over time.
These physical damages can make thorough cleaning difficult, potentially leading to the accumulation of residues and food contamination. The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) emphasizes that food storage containers must be specifically designed for that purpose, be clean, sanitized, and in good condition.
Additionally, users are cautioned against placing non-microwave-safe plastics in the microwave. For proper food preservation, it is recommended to use dedicated food containers with tight-fitting lids, such as glass models, which are easier to sanitize and better suited for refrigerator or freezer use.
