Safe meat defrosting methods to prevent bacterial growth

Proper meat defrosting is essential for maintaining food quality and preventing the growth of harmful microorganisms. Experts recommend defrosting meat in the refrigerator, as the low temperature helps slow bacterial multiplication. While this method is the safest, it requires significant time depending on the size and thickness of the meat.

For faster results, defrosting in cold water is a viable alternative. To do this safely, the meat must be placed in a watertight, well-sealed bag to prevent direct contact with water. The water should be changed every 30 minutes to ensure it remains cold. Using warm or hot water is discouraged, as it can raise the surface temperature of the meat to levels that encourage rapid bacterial growth while the interior remains frozen.
