Food Safety Trust Holds in Australia‑NZ, Grows Across Europe
A 2025 Consumer Insights Tracker survey of Australia and New Zealand finds about 70 % of consumers remain confident that the food sold in both countries is safe, with confidence unchanged since 2023. Trust in Food Standards Australia New Zealand stays strong, with roughly 78 % of aware respondents expressing confidence in the regulator, and around 80 % say they can rely on food labels to make informed choices.
The EIT Food “State of Trust in Europe’s Food System” report, covering 18 European nations, shows 68 % of Europeans trust farmers—the most trusted group in the food chain. Retailer trust sits at 54 % and confidence in restaurants has risen to 53 %. Overall confidence in food remains limited; fewer than half of respondents feel confident about what they consume and only 36 % consider it sustainable. The report notes that transparency, competence and perceived care are key drivers of the trust recovery, quoting the study: “Even though consumers rarely personally engage with farmers, they see them as trustworthy.”
