Food security requires more than national food production

Food security extends beyond a nation's ability to produce food, as high production does not inherently prevent social vulnerability or hunger. True food security relies on four essential pillars: sufficient production across agriculture, livestock, and fisheries; physical and economic accessibility through stable prices and markets; nutritional adequacy including clean water and healthcare; and uninterrupted availability.

Food insecurity occurs when these pillars are compromised. It is categorized into two types: chronic insecurity, linked to long-term poverty and resource scarcity, and acute insecurity, which arises suddenly due to crises such as armed conflict, droughts, floods, or economic collapse. These crises disrupt supply chains and increase food prices, exacerbating the risk of famine.
