Food Standards Scotland cautions on misuse of plastic wrap and foil
Food Standards Scotland (FSS) warns that not all food‑wrap products are suitable for every type of food. The agency advises consumers to read packaging instructions because some plastic wraps can melt or leach substances when exposed to high heat, such as in ovens or on hot pans, and should not be used with high‑fat foods like pastries, butter‑cream cakes, bacon, fried meat, or cheese.
FSS also notes that aluminium foil and other aluminum containers can affect the taste and safety of acidic foods, recommending that items such as lime, pineapple, cabbage, raspberries, tomatoes and other soft fruits be stored without foil contact, especially for long periods. Proper use of both plastic wrap and foil helps maintain food safety and quality.
