Food waste reduction strategies shift toward prevention and circularity

Efforts to combat food waste are shifting from simple surplus recovery to proactive prevention and circular cooking practices. On an individual level, utilizing imperfect vegetables, stale bread, or leftover cheese to create meals like vegetable meatballs can reduce environmental footprints. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), global food waste exceeds one billion tons annually, contributing to approximately 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

On a systemic level, discussions regarding the Gadda Law—which facilitates the donation of surplus food and pharmaceuticals—highlight the need to move beyond mere donation. Experts suggest that collective catering services must improve planning and consumption data analysis to prevent waste before it occurs. Upcoming initiatives aim to emphasize data-driven prevention to optimize resources and reduce the ecological impact of the entire production chain.
