Food waste trends drive demand for sustainable packaging and preservation

Recent studies highlight a growing consumer demand for sustainable food solutions that balance environmental impact with functionality. In Chile, nearly half of the population admits to wasting food at least once a week, the highest rate among surveyed countries including Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina. Research from FoodTech Cheaf indicates that 93.6% of Chileans consider food waste a relevant issue, while 90.1% recognize its environmental impact. Additionally, the Universidad de Las Américas estimates that Chile loses approximately 5.2 million tons of food annually.

Consumer trends show that sustainability is increasingly integrated into household routines through shopping planning and waste separation. According to the Ainia Consumer Barometer, 90% of consumers are willing to eat sub-optimal food, and 78% regularly separate packaging and food waste. For the food industry, this shift presents opportunities in developing better preservation technologies, optimized packaging that facilitates recycling, and products designed to extend shelf life and reduce domestic waste.
