Foodstuffs break-up proposal faces opposition from producers and operators

Food producers and nearly 500 Pak’nSave, New World, and Four Square owner-operators are challenging government proposals to break up the Foodstuffs co-operative. Critics argue that dismantling the co-operative model could undermine the shared buying power, logistics, and infrastructure that support New Zealand’s grocery supply chain.

Simon Berry, Managing Director of Whitestone Cheese Company, expressed concern that forcing the sale of a family-built business contradicts free-market principles. He noted that the complex infrastructure required to deliver products across New Zealand’s difficult geography could be compromised, potentially increasing unit costs for producers and consumers alike.

Owner-operators from both the North and South Islands have signed open letters questioning how a split would impact grocery affordability. They warn that the loss of scale and centralized technology could increase costs and complexity, particularly for stores serving rural and remote communities.
