Foodwatch warns against ultra-processed high-protein foods
The NGO Foodwatch has released an investigation warning that many products marketed as ‘high protein’ are actually ultra-processed foods. The organization identified ten specific products that use protein content as a ‘halo effect’ to appear healthy while masking high levels of sugars, sweeteners, and additives.
Key products highlighted in the report include Danone’s HiPRO blueberry drink, Nature Valley Protein bars, Carrefour Sensation High Protein salad, Lactel chocolate drink, and Nestlé’s Lion Protein cereals. These items were found to contain markers of ultra-processing, such as modified starches, glucose syrup, and controversial additives like carrageenans and intense sweeteners like acesulfame-K.
Beyond the processing concerns, health experts warn that excessive protein consumption can lead to adverse health effects, including renal and cardiovascular issues. Foodwatch is calling for mandatory labeling of ultra-processed status, similar to the Nutri-Score system, to help consumers make more informed nutritional choices.
