Foodwatch warns supplement brands over Ashwagandha health risks
Consumer protection organization Foodwatch has issued warnings to several supplement brands, including ESN, More Nutrition, and Naturally Pam, regarding the marketing of Ashwagandha. While the plant is often marketed as a lifestyle product to combat stress, anxiety, and insomnia, experts warn of significant health risks associated with uncontrolled long-term use.
Potential complications include liver damage and adverse interactions with other medications. Specifically, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) advises that children, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and individuals with liver disease should avoid consumption. For pregnant women, the plant may induce contractions, posing a risk to unborn children. Foodwatch further contends that the current advertising claims for these products violate EU regulations.
