Foot health experts advise on footwear and movement during heatwaves

Health experts and nutritionists are offering advice to manage foot discomfort and swelling during hot weather. Podiatrists warn against wearing flat flip-flops for extended periods, as they can increase strain on the heels, soles, and lower back. Instead, they recommend structured sandals with shock-absorbing soles, such as the Decathlon NH500 model, which provides arch support and stability.

To combat heat-induced edema—the swelling of feet and ankles caused by heat dilating blood vessels and slowing venous return—nutritionists suggest regular movement. Walking for at least twenty minutes a day helps activate the calf muscle pump, which assists blood flow back to the heart and reduces fluid accumulation in the lower limbs.
