Foot health experts warn against improper summer footwear

Medical experts and podiatrists are highlighting the importance of proper footwear to maintain posture, balance, and overall foot health. Dr. Frédéric Saldmann notes that the body relies on the feet as a foundation, and improper support can impact walking and equilibrium. He advises caution with flip-flops, which may lack sufficient stability for long walks, and suggests opting for stable, well-fitted shoes instead.

Podiatrist Maud Falconnet warns that summer footwear choices can exacerbate conditions like hallux valgus (bunions). She identifies pointed toes, high heels, and sandals lacking solid support as the three worst types of summer shoes. These styles can increase friction and pressure, especially as feet tend to swell in the heat. Experts recommend observing uneven sole wear, which may indicate postural issues, and seeking professional advice from a podiatrist if pain or significant asymmetry occurs.
