Foot health experts warn against wearing sneakers without socks

Podologists and dermatologists advise that walking in sneakers without socks raises the risk of foot problems. Socks absorb sweat, lower friction and limit bacterial and fungal growth inside shoes. Without the barrier, moisture and skin oils collect in the shoe lining, creating an environment that promotes blisters, odor, athlete's foot and nail fungus, especially in synthetic sneakers that retain heat and moisture.

Experts recommend wearing socks with closed shoes, allowing shoes to dry for at least 24 hours between uses, and opting for open sandals when the weather permits. Repeatedly wearing the same sneakers sock‑free can exacerbate irritation and infection.
