Football clubs face financial scrutiny over debt and fund misuse

Financial scandals are emerging within major football clubs in Slovakia and Hungary. In Slovakia, FC Tatran Prešov is facing a crisis involving millions of euros in debt. Recent financial analyses revealed significant liabilities, including approximately 225,000 euros in unpaid managerial bonuses. Former board chairman Vlastislav Laskovský defended the legitimacy of these payments during a city council meeting, prompting local officials to approve an in-depth audit of the club's finances for the period between 2022 and 2025.

In Hungary, investigations are underway regarding the potential misuse of state funds by Ferencváros. Hungarian State Secretary for Sport Attila Kálnoki-Kis reported that documentation suggests 11.2 billion forints, originally intended for the construction of a sports complex, was instead used by the club's management company to fund the registration rights of 38 professional players between 2019 and 2024. While the club received a total of 25 billion forints for large-scale infrastructure projects, the planned multi-functional sports city has not been completed as intended.
