Argentine football faces racism and violence scandals
Argentine football is facing multiple controversies involving violence, racism, and disciplinary issues. Following the Supercopa Internacional final, referee Darío Herrera filed a serious report against Estudiantes de La Plata officials. The report alleges that president Juan Sebastián Verón and other directors, including Pascual Caiella and Marcos Angeleri, insulted and confronted the referee, with Verón reportedly stating, “Hay que matarlos a todos” (We have to kill them all). In response to Rosario Central’s victory, players and fans engaged in provocative celebrations, including displaying a coffin dedicated to Verón.
In a separate incident during the Torneo Regional Federal Amateur, player Facundo Reveco of Atlético Palmira was detained in Mendoza after being accused of making racist gestures toward Brazilian player Antonio Ponte Lourenço. Reveco has denied the allegations, claiming he was also insulted.
Additionally, reports have emerged regarding escalating violence in youth football at Club Villa Argüello, where a match between youth teams descended into a brawl, leaving families unprotected and prompting calls for better social support in formative divisions.
