Football developments: Gold Cup potential in Mexico and record MLS spending

Reports suggest the 2027 Gold Cup may return to Mexico for the first time since 2003. This potential hosting follows the success of recent major football events in the country. CONCACAF is also considering expanding the tournament from 16 to 24 teams, which would involve inviting more international nations to participate.

In Major League Soccer (MLS), club spending has reached record levels. In 2026, MLS teams spent a total of $370 million across the winter and summer transfer windows. This represents a significant increase from 2024, when the league spent $188 million. Notable high-value transfers include Josh Sargent to Toronto FC for $22 million and Breel Embolo to Atlanta United for $18 million. While spending has surged, it remains significantly lower than the English Premier League, which recently saw summer spending reach $4.7 billion.
