Football Ferns matches in Panama cancelled after earthquake
Two scheduled friendly matches between the New Zealand Football Ferns and the Panama Women's National Team in Panama City have been cancelled following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Panama. The seismic activity, which included heavy aftershocks, prompted the cancellation of the series to prioritize the safety of both delegations.
The New Zealand squad and staff have begun their journey back home. The cancellation deprives the Football Ferns of critical international match experience intended for preparation ahead of the next FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.
While the matches were called off, the Panamanian women's team has continued training sessions. Additionally, the Panamanian players and the Panamanian Football Federation have launched a solidarity initiative to collect donations, such as non-perishable food, water, and first aid supplies, for communities affected by the earthquake.
