Football figures discuss career struggles and media shifts

Former professional footballer Zinho Vanheusden has opened up about the mental struggles following his premature retirement due to persistent injuries. Vanheusden noted that while early injuries were manageable, his time at AZ Alkmaar and KV Mechelen proved most difficult mentally. He described the frustration of recurring injuries, including a broken metatarsal caused by an incident during a match. He credited a mental coach for helping him navigate his anger and the isolation of rehabilitating without a home club.

Separately, former coach and analyst Dennis van Wijk has announced his departure from football television analysis in Belgium. Van Wijk criticized the current state of sports broadcasting, claiming that deep tactical analysis is being replaced by entertainment and ‘café talk’. He noted that the rise of podcasts and a demand for faster, more fleeting content has shifted the focus away from the technical aspects of the game.
