Football injury risks rise with turf density and affect NFL players' lower limbs

A peer‑reviewed study of U.S. high‑school football fields found that higher synthetic‑turf infill weight—indicating denser, more compacted surfaces—correlates with increased lower‑extremity injury rates among players. The research suggests that infill compaction reduces impact absorption and raises rotational resistance, making legs more vulnerable even when fields meet standard specifications.

Separate data on the National Football League show that lower‑extremity injuries also dominate at the professional level. Knee injuries account for over 20% of all NFL injuries, with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears being the most serious, averaging 62 cases per year between 2015 and 2019. Ankle injuries and hamstring strains are the next most common, each contributing a substantial share of time‑loss injuries.

Both findings highlight the importance of field maintenance and injury‑prevention strategies across all levels of football, from high‑school to the NFL.
