Football leagues resume with Aguirre's Valencia debut and Peruvian league reforms
Club football resumes this weekend following the FIFA international break, featuring significant developments in both European and Peruvian leagues.
In Europe, Mexican coach Javier Aguirre is set to make his debut with Valencia in LaLiga, where the team currently sits in penultimate position. Additionally, Mexican players Edson Álvarez and Raúl Jiménez are preparing for upcoming matches in England with West Ham and Wolves, respectively.
In Peru, the Liga 1 Torneo Clausura restarts with several roster changes. Alianza Lima has reintegrated three key players—Marco Huamán, Renzo Garcés, and Jairo Vélez—following their participation with the national team, though physical fatigue remains a concern. Meanwhile, several players and coaching staff members face suspensions for the upcoming round due to accumulated cards.
Looking toward the future, the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) is evaluating structural reforms for the 2027 season. Proposed changes include the reintroduction of a ‘minutes quota’ to increase playing time for U-20 players and a progressive reduction of the foreign player limit from seven to four per club. The FPF is also considering incorporating foreign members into the National Commission of Referees (CONAR) board.
