Football sponsorship market diversifies through new commercial partnerships
The commercial landscape of football is diversifying as clubs and leagues expand beyond traditional consumer-facing sponsorships into sectors such as insurance, energy, and financial trading.
In the women’s professional game, WTW has entered a multi-year partnership with WSL Football to serve as the official insurance partner for the Barclays Women’s Super League and WSL2. This collaboration aims to develop specialist insurance and risk-management solutions tailored specifically for female footballers and clubs.
Betting brands are also evolving their integration within the sport. Beyond traditional shirt branding, companies are utilizing sleeve sponsorships, training kit placements, and stadium advertising—such as LED boards and interview backdrops—to reach supporters through multiple channels. This shift follows new regulations, such as the Premier League’s decision to withdraw gambling sponsors from the front of matchday shirts starting in the 2026/27 season.
Other recent partnerships include Aurora Utilities with Crystal Palace, BetTOM with Burnley, and VARIANSE with Southampton, reflecting a broader trend of using sports properties for business development, digital content, and targeted stakeholder engagement.
