Footwear manufacturers in Portugal face closures and layoffs

The Portuguese footwear sector is facing significant labor disruptions. In Avintes, Pontual Indústria de Calçado has unexpectedly closed its doors, leaving approximately 60 workers without employment and with unpaid July salaries and holiday subsidies. Workers have reportedly maintained a presence at the facilities to prevent the removal of machinery and equipment.

Separately, Ara Shoes Portuguesa, which operates an industrial unit in Seia, is preparing for a new period of lay-offs and a collective dismissal process that could affect 63 employees. The company cited a drop in orders exceeding 15% for the Autumn/Winter 2026 collection, alongside a reduction in productive activity and the need to restructure personnel. The lay-off period is expected to run from August 31 to October 31, depending on production needs.
