Footwear market shifts as formal shoe demand rises over sneakers

A shift in fashion preferences toward formal footwear is impacting the global footwear market. While interest in sneakers has historically risen—growing from a 37 percent market share in 2012 to over 50 percent in 2024—current trends show a move away from casual and athletic styles in favor of loafers and other elegant options.

This transition is reflected in stock market performance. Companies specializing in formal footwear, such as Steve Madden and Ralph Lauren, have seen significant stock increases of 28 percent and nearly 18 percent respectively over the last 12 months. Conversely, major athletic brands are facing declines, with Nike shares dropping approximately 48 percent and Adidas falling by 17 percent during the same period.
