FOPEA urges Argentine Senate to establish new Journalist Statute

Representatives from the Forum of Argentine Journalism (FOPEA) presented guidelines to the Senate's Commission on Systems, Media, and Freedom of Expression to urge the creation of a new Professional Journalist Statute. The presentation comes in response to the repeal of the previous statute, which leaves journalists without a legal framework after January 1, 2027.

FOPEA leaders, including President Fernando Stanich, emphasized that the absence of updated regulations creates legal insecurity and fosters disinformation. Their proposed guidelines focus on three main pillars: protecting specific labor rights, updating professional definitions to include digital and multiplatform work, and safeguarding editorial independence. They also advocated for conscience clauses to protect ethical standards.

Senator Carolina Moisés, chair of the commission, noted that the current statute's validity is tied to labor reform legislation. The commission is working to socialize the project and coordinate with the Commission on Labor and Social Welfare to advance the debate.
