FOPETCONS pension fund faces calls for protection in Dominican Republic

Labor unions in the Dominican Republic are advocating for the protection and strengthening of the Construction Workers Pension Fund (FOPETCONS). The National Federation of Construction Industry Workers (FENTICOMMC), led by Pedro Julio Alcántara, and the National Confederation of Union Unity (CNUS) are opposing initiatives that seek to transform or eliminate the fund.

Established by Law No. 6-86, FOPETCONS was created to provide social security, pensions, and retirement services to construction workers, a sector often characterized by temporary contracts and unstable income. Beyond financial pensions, the fund supports social services, such as the Eduardo Alexi Center for Specialties and Geriatrics in Santo Domingo Este, which provides specialized medical care to workers and the general public.
