Beskydy mushrooms and autumn seasonal guides

As autumn arrives, various guides offer advice on seasonal activities, nature, and safety. In the Beskydy Mountains, the Muzeum Beskyd has launched a short-term exhibition titled ‘Živé houby’ (Living Mushrooms). Despite a dry season that has hindered many foragers, museum staff and volunteers successfully collected over one hundred species of mushrooms, including edible, inedible, and poisonous varieties, to form the basis of the display at the Frýdek Castle.

Safety warnings are highlighted regarding autumn produce. Certain pumpkins and gourds can become toxic due to high levels of cucurbitacins, an extremely bitter defense mechanism triggered by plant stress or cross-breeding with ornamental varieties. A single taste of intense bitterness is a clear signal to discard the fruit, as these toxins are heat-resistant.

Other seasonal topics include the identification of edible mushrooms like the brown birch bolete and various Russulas, as well as the nutritional benefits of rose hips, which are rich in vitamin C. Additionally, seasonal lifestyle advice covers autumn home decoration using natural elements like branches and cones, and fashion tips focusing on high-quality materials like wool and cashmere for a sophisticated look.
