Forbes fires Chief Content Officer over $6 million secret payment

Forbes has fired its former Chief Content Officer, Randall Lane, following the discovery that he accepted a secret $6 million payment from RJ Shook, the founder of Shook Research.

Shook Research is a market research firm that partners with Forbes to produce rankings of financial advisers and wealth management firms. RJ Shook stated the payment was intended as recognition for services and guidance provided to him, including assistance during the sale of Shook Research to the private equity firm PPC Enterprises. Shook expressed regret, noting that while his intentions were good, the payment was a mistake that raised questions regarding the integrity of the firm's rankings.

Lane previously characterized the sum as a gift from a friend and admitted that failing to disclose it was a serious error in judgment. A Forbes spokesperson described the payment as unacceptable and a violation of company policies regarding trust, transparency, and disclosure. The media organization is currently working with outside counsel to conduct an independent review of the incident, though it has stated it has not yet found evidence that the integrity of its published rankings was compromised.
