Forbes fires top editor over undisclosed $6 million payment

Forbes has dismissed its top editor and chief content officer, Randall Lane, following the discovery of an undisclosed $6 million payment. The payment was made by RJ Shook, the founder of Shook Research, a firm that has partnered with Forbes since 2016 to produce rankings of wealth management professionals.

The transaction was reportedly uncovered after Shook sold a majority stake in his company to the private equity firm PPC Enterprises. During a review of company emails, the new owners identified the payment and alerted Forbes. Lane, who had been with the publication for nearly 16 years, described the money as a gift in recognition of advice he had provided Shook over the years.

In a statement, Lane admitted to a “serious error in judgment” and expressed regret for failing to disclose the payment. Forbes stated that once the undisclosed conflict of interest was brought to their attention, they took immediate action. The incident has raised significant questions regarding editorial independence and the effectiveness of the publication's conflict-of-interest safeguards.
