Forced displacement rises in Mexico due to insecurity
Data from INEGI’s 2025 Intercensal Survey indicates that 3.88% of households in Apatzingán, Michoacán, have experienced forced displacement due to insecurity. This figure places the municipality seventh in the state for the highest percentage of homes affected by such displacement.
In Chihuahua, families displaced from the mountainous municipalities of Moris and Uruachi due to organized crime violence have staged protests in Cuauhtémoc. These families, who abandoned their homes, livestock, and crops over two years ago, are demanding that the Chihuahua government provide access to affordable housing.
The protesters are calling for a review of a recent auction that awarded 165 homes in the Pensiones Civiles del Estado subdivision to a private real estate company. The displaced families report that they have faced high rental costs and previously attempted to occupy uninhabited homes to purchase them from the state, but claim they were forced to retreat following threats from police officers.
