Ford and GM vie for US Army tactical truck contract

Ford Motor Co. is competing with General Motors and Utah‑based off‑road maker BC Customs for a Pentagon contract to develop a new tactical pickup truck for the U.S. Army. Ford will build three prototypes based on its F‑Series Super Duty pickups, aiming to deliver a silent, all‑terrain vehicle that can serve as a mobile power source and transport troops and equipment. The contract calls for about 600 trucks, with the winning prototype expected in 2027.

The bid underscores the Pentagon’s drive to tap domestic automotive capacity to offset equipment shortfalls stemming from the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. GM has already field‑tested its “ISV‑Heavy” prototype built on the Silverado platform. A Ford spokesperson said, "We are excited to start work on this Army contract and look forward to delivering several incredibly capable vehicle types that demonstrate the value Ford can provide to the Army and soldiers." The deal could become Ford’s largest military‑vehicle award since the Cold War.
