Ford and Hyundai Motor Group compete for third in U.S. auto market
Ford and Hyundai Motor Group are in a tight competition for the third-place position in the U.S. light vehicle market following the third quarter of 2026. Ford managed to maintain its rank with 509,764 total sales, a 6.6% decrease from the previous year, while Hyundai Motor Group—comprising Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis—reached 506,200 units.
When comparing light vehicles specifically, the gap narrows significantly to just 1,195 units. Ford’s performance was bolstered by strong demand for its F-Series pickup trucks and large SUVs, including the Bronco and Explorer. However, sales were impacted by the phase-out of models like the Escape and Lincoln Corsair, as well as a sharp decline in electric vehicle sales.
Hyundai Motor Group’s growth was driven by record-breaking third-quarter performances from both Hyundai and Kia, fueled by high demand for hybrid models and SUVs. Kia reported an 8% increase in sales, reaching a quarterly high, while Hyundai saw a 3% increase. Industry analysts suggest that the fourth-quarter outcome may depend heavily on Kia’s continued momentum as Ford works to normalize production following recent supply chain issues.
