Ford and Toyota urge EU to broaden 'Made in Europe' criteria
Automakers Ford and Toyota are advocating for a broader definition of European industrial origin as the European Union develops the Industrial Acceleration Act. The legislation aims to bolster continental production and reduce strategic dependencies, particularly against competition from China.
Jim Baumbick, President of Ford Europe, argues that the 'Made in Europe' label should be based on where value is generated—including engineering, research, and component manufacturing—rather than solely on where final assembly occurs. He notes that limiting the designation to the EU-27 ignores established industrial collaborations with neighbors like Turkey and the United Kingdom.
Similarly, Toyota has proposed shifting the regulatory focus from 'Made in Europe' to 'Made with Europe.' Toyota Motor Europe CEO Yoshihiro Nakata emphasized that the company is a regional producer with approximately 25,000 employees in Europe. Toyota is requesting that local content requirements, which could reach 70% under draft legislation, be implemented gradually over three years and calculated based on total ex-factory value, including R&D and engineering.
